WHAKAMIHA

Whakamiha is a culturally sensitive residential and communal project designed with careful consideration of traditional Maori site use and environmental context. The design draws inspiration from the natural curves of the Rangitaiki River, integrating organic forms that reflect the river’s flow and significance in Maori history. The building is oriented to respect and embrace the surrounding landscape, including Putauaki to the south and the Rangitaiki Awa, providing a view that connects with cultural heritage.
The structure utilizes layered, curvilinear forms that accommodate residential spaces, communal areas, and landscape integration. Its sun path optimization enhances natural lighting throughout, fostering a connection to nature while maintaining energy efficiency. Elevations and floor plans emphasize transparency, community engagement, and a seamless blend with the environment, creating an inclusive and dynamic living space.
